When you think of Shel Silverstein, you probably think of a poet and a children's book author. What I didn't know is that he was actually quite the songwriter. So much in fact that he was inducted into the Country Music Songwriter's Hall of Fame a few years after his death.
Earlier today I shared a post to the Nashville+ community with a playlist of songs about Nashville. The purpose of the post was to see if there were any songs about Nashville that I might have missed. Travis Tackett responded with a few suggestions, one of which was "Nobody Eats at Linebaugh's Anymore." Out of curiosity, I did some research to see what the song was about and then found a link to a PDF of a poem by Shel Silverstein called "The Devil and Billy Markham."
It turns out that Shel had many sides to him, one of which was a writer and cartoonist. His travelogues in the late 50's became quite popular. One of those is the poem performed by Bobby Bare below, a story of a man who had tried his luck with music in Nashville and figured he'd be better off playing a game with the devil. It's quite an awesome tale and a really well written poem.
The remarkable thing here of this is that a tiny spark and some curiosity can lead you to some really interesting things. Thanks, Travis Tackett for pointing me in the right direction!
Here's the first chapter of the poem (I suggest reading while listening to the recording below):
The Devil walked into Linebaugh's on a rainy Nashville night
While the lost souls sat and sipped their soup in the sickly yellow neon light.
And the Devil, he looked around the room, then got down on his knees.
He says, "Is there one among you scum who'll roll the dice with me?"
Red, he just strums his guitar, pretending not to hear.
And Eddie, he just looks away and takes another sip of beer.
Vince, he says, "Not me, I'll pass, I've had my share of Hell,"
And kept scribbling on a napkin, some song he was sure would sell.
Ronnie just kept whisperin' low to the snuff queen who clutched at his sleeve,
And somebody coughed -- and the Devil scoffed -- and turned on his heel to leave.
"Hold on," says a voice from the back of the room. "'fore you walk out that door.
If you're lookin' for some action, friend, well, I've rolled some dice before."
And there stood Billy Markham, he'd been on the scene for years,
Singin' all them raunchy songs that the town didn't want to hear.
He'd been cut and bled a thousand times, and his eyes were wise and sad,
And all his songs were the songs of the street, and all his luck was bad.
"I know you," says Billy Markham, "from many a dark and funky place,
But you always spoke in a different voice and wore a different face.
While me, I've gambled here on Music Row with hustlers and with whores,
And, Hell, I ain't afraid to roll them devilish dice of yours."
"Well, then, get down," says the Devil, "just as if you was gonna pray,
And take these dice in your luckless hand and I'll tell you how this game is played.
You get one roll -- and you bet your soul -- and if you roll thirteen you win,
And all the joys of flesh and gold are yours to touch and spend.
But if that thirteen don't come up, then kiss your ass goodbye
And will your useless bones to God, 'cause your goddamn soul is mine!"
"Thirteen?" says Billy Markham. "Hell, I've played in tougher games.
I've loved ambitious women and I've rode on wheelless trains.
So gimme room, you stinkin' fiend, and let it all unwind.
Nobody's ever rolled a thirteen yet, but this just might be the time."
Then Billy Markham, he takes the dice, and the dice feel as heavy as stones.
"They should, they should," the Devil says, "'cause they're carved from Jesus' bones."
And Billy Markham turns the dice and the dice, they have no spots.
"I'm sorry," says the Devil, "but they're the only dice I got."
"Well, shit," says Billy Markham. "Now, I really don't mean to bitch,
But I never thought I'd stake my roll in a sucker's game like this."
"Well, then, walk off," says the Devil. "Nobody's tied you down."
"Walk off where?" says Billy Markham. "It's the only game in town.
But I just wanna say 'fore I make my play, that if I should chance to lose,
I will this guitar to some would-be star who'll play some honest blues,
Who ain't afraid to sing the words like damn or shit or fuck
And who ain't afraid to put his ass on the stage where he makes his bucks.
But if he plays this guitar safe, and sings some sugary lies,
I'll haunt him till we meet in Hell -- now, gimme them fuckin' dice."
And Billy Markham shakes the dice and yells, "Come on, thirteen!"
And the dice, they roll -- and they come up blank. "You lose!" the Devil screams.
"But I really must say 'fore we go our way that I really do like your style.
Of all the fools I've played and beat, you're the first one who lost with a smile."
"Well, I'll tell you somethin'," Billy Markham says. "Those odds weren't too damn bad.
In fourteen years on Music Row, that's the best damn chance I've had."
Then, arm in arm, Billy Markham and the Devil walk out through Linebaugh's door,
Leavin' Billy's old beat-up guitar there on the floor.
And if you go into Linebaugh's now, you can see it there today
Hangin' from a nail on the wall of peelin' gray
Billy Markham's old guitar . . .
That nobody dares to play.

They are rip-off artists. You have to pay money to get in the yard, they search through all of your tools, you can't take a bad part into the yard to matchup, their inventory on the computer is 100% wrong and they will try to charge you for tools and parts that were already in your tool kit on the way in. Also the prices are ridiculous - just buy a new part before you go there. Feel free to spread the word. - Todd :(

Flying snakes are mildly venomous, though they are considered harmless because their toxicity is not dangerous to humans. Their range is in Southeast Asia, southernmost China, India, and Sri Lanka. A "flying snake" glides by using its ridge scales along its belly to push against rough bark surface of tree trunks, allowing it to move vertically up a tree. Upon reaching the end of a tree's branch, the snake continues moving until its tail dangles from the branch's end. It then makes a J-shape bend, leans forward to select the level of inclination it wishes to travel to control its flight path, as well as selecting a desired landing area. Once it decides on a destination, it propels itself by thrusting its body up and away from the tree, sucking in its stomach, flaring out its ribs to turn its body in a "pseudo concave wing", all the while making a continual serpentine motion of lateral undulation parallel to the ground to stabilize its direction in midair in order to land safely Flying snakes are able to glide better than flying squirrels and other gliding animals, despite the lack of limbs, wings, or any other wing-like projections, gliding through the forest and jungle it inhabits with the distance being as great as 100 m. Their destination is mostly predicted by ballistics; however, they can exercise some in-flight attitude control by "slithering" in the air.
Their ability to glide has been an object of interest for physicists and the United States Department of Defense in recent years, and studies continue to be made on what other, more subtle, factors contribute to their flight. According to recent research conducted by the University of Chicago, scientists discovered a correlation between size and gliding ability, in which smaller flying snakes were able to glide longer distances horizontally.

(This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.
Torero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”)

Important information about Communities & Pages
A business Page can create a Community or be made a moderator and owner. Linking a Community to a Page helps in the visibility of the Community as it'll be displayed in the profile of the Page.
The +1's that are displayed on the Page's profile, under the profile picture come now from three possible places:
- Someone has given the Page a +1 under the profile pic
- The amount of people who follow the Page
- The amount of people who are members to the Community
This +1 figure is not quite correct, it seems, as there are people who belong to the Community, follow the Page and perhaps give a +1 to the Page... They are all counted in the total of +1's.
Sometimes there are glitches in the count too, but your +1's are never lost, it seems.
A Page with several managers
- If a page has several managers and is made a moderator in a Community, all the managers can post and comment as the Page when signed in as the Page.
- If the Page is promoted to owner, all the Page managers have the same rights as the owner. They can even delete the Community.
A Community can have multiple owners.
From Googler +Brian Glick :
In communities, people and Pages need to be moderators for at least 2 weeks before they can be promoted to owner. We do this to help prevent communities from being suddenly taken over by someone else if an owner's account is compromised.
- Is the limit here the 500 members, I wonder? After hitting 500 you cannot change the Community name anymore...
You can have as many pages in a community as you want. Think of them like normal "people" when it comes to a community.
A Page can create several communities: A good idea for businesses with several languages that their clients use. The main Page in English? Then communities in all sorts of languages.
Anything you'd like to add?

“I wake up thinking about my job. Before I leave for work, I check my work email before checking my personal email.” Neola Young, the director of the Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC), a program at Portland’s Q Center wakes up that way every day. On her bike ride to work she thinks about a conversation she had with a young person the day before, how much glitter to get for SMYRC’s next drag night, and whether or not she’s doing enough. When she arrives her day is frantic. Understaffed but in high demand, SMYRC has its hands full. The LittleBigFund asked Neola how she feels at the end of each workday and she answered, “I feel…conflicted.”
It’s clear that Neola, who gets choked up when she talks about her work, knows that she’s in the right place to do the right thing. “I just want it to be enough.” Balancing her own life and her life as a servant to the at-risk LGBTQQ youth in her area, Neola knows that her rapidly expanding program needs as much support as it can get.
Show your #LGBT #Pride by voting for The Q Center's SMYRC after you donate at LittleBigFund.org http://bit.ly/11a4HJe

Enjoy the delectable taste of chocolately Edible Anus
The British Have Out Done Even The Japanese With This
Excuses are like anuses; everyone’s got one. That’s the reasoning behind the Edible Anus line of chocolates created in England. These handcrafted chocolates represent something that transcends cultural boundaries to offer creamy sphincter shaped goodness to the whole world, even reaching Japan where netizens have been left open-mouthed at the idea of munching on a chocolatey orifice.
Edible Anuses are available in three flavors; Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate, and White Chocolate. Pardon me while I just check that this isn’t a dream and I just actually wrote that last sentence. Okay, on to business. The sweets are hand made with all natural ingredients and are completely free of artificial preservatives, ensuring the freshest and cleanest anuses around.
The makers would like to warn you, however, and these anuses may have been around nuts. Those with allergies might want to steer clear. I swear we’re not making this up.
As the existence of this product reached Japanese shores, many netizens came out to comment. Some were against the notion of anus chocolates with some even commenting that Britain had lost the plot, saying, “British people have no sense, this is freakish and in bad taste.”
However, the big question on commenters’ minds was who the anus belonged to. According to the Edible Anus website these chocolates were “lovingly crafted from the delectable posterior of our stunning butt model”. Beyond that, the lord of this ring is uncertain.
Still, many commenters in Japan seemed intent on knowing whose butthole this was. One recommended, “If you put a picture of the person on the box these could sell like crazy!” Another said that “if these belonged to AKB48 it would be a guaranteed hit.” #agreed

Taken in 1967 by Rocco Morabito, this is one of the most powerful photographs we’ve seen. Called the Kiss of Life photo, it shows a utility worker named J.D. Thompson giving mouth-to-mouth to co-worker Randall G. Champion after he went unconscious following contact with a high voltage line.
What’s even more incredible is Champion not only survived this thanks to Thompson, but he lived an extra 35 years. He died in 2002. Thompson is still alive today.
Share this powerful image and story. It shows selflessness and goodness in a sometimes evil world.

So I joined up here because I still occupy and I think keeping in touch is necessary. I have found though that I dread seeing posts from here in my stream. Occupy should be about more than just sharing whats wrong. It's about making stuff better, isn't it. What good do I get by staying here ? <----- honest question ---- How can I help?

Am I the only person left who thinks Manning was wrong. FTR - I also suspect his motivation. I do believe the government is way WAY over reaching with the charges though. I think time served and a dishonorable would be appropriate.

Asparagus breaks ground: the tension between tenderness and...
... the terrible smell of your urine as you piss it out.
- Find out all about it in the first installment of our new series at Foodies+: Zing&Zany with MeeMing.
- In this series, Foodies+ Editor Mee Ming Wong , will explore the zanier side of cooking
- kind of like "Everything you ever wanted to know about Food but where afraid to ask..."
In her first post, Mee Ming explores what happens to us (well... to some of us) when we ingest asparagus. She also offers a smell test, the Whiz Quiz, where you can rate yourself on her asparagus urine smell scale (1-3).
I took the Whiz Quiz & I was given an out-of-scale 8!!!
Following Mee Ming's advise:
- I solicited an "impartial judge to make the fragrance note observations"
- I had 3 cups of water, followed by the plate of steamed & peeled asparagus
- to ensure that the "beautiful musical metaphors to be found" were not contaminated with others, i skipped the hollandaise sauce & sprinkled only a tiny bit of ladolemono
- as soon as "the inventory" started becoming "liquidated" the "impartial judge" stormed out of the bathroom screaming "eight! eight! eight!"
Read all about it here: #foodieszingnzany

Police in the western city of Turkey (Izmir) have raided the houses of dozens of students, and taken them into custody for sharing this photo via Twitter! The picture is taken from a video that shows a policeman randomly and violently pulling the hair of passerby girl who has done absolutely nothing wrong.
Apparently, the students were also accused of inciting uprising because they were warning each other - via Twitter -of police presence in areas of protests. This is happening in a country with democratically elected prime minister (who two days ago declared social media, especially twitter as menace to society).

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

I still can't quite believe that Sheila Schilling has allowed me to share this. It's just some touching moments with her kids and an old Mardi Gras song. Sure, there are lots of versions out there by big stars and with extensive back up and extravagance but this one, with just a mother singing and her kids is what music really is.

It's always so neat when you know you are reaping something... Today, my husband and I took our youngest to the Dairy Queen and a man, who was clearly homeless, rode up on his bike with a pizza. There were some young girls staring at him and making fun of him and my heart just broke for him; but since I was already sad, I didn't bother to reach out to him like I normally would. However, he reached out to me.. As we were sitting there keeping to ourselves, he began to talk to us. I still didn't even really look at him out of fear of crying but Cory politely responded and chatted with him. Then, he got up and came to our table and gave our daughter a piece of his pizza. He said it was his 60th birthday and he was celebrating with pizza and ice cream. I realized how most people would have taken that gesture but I knew how priceless it was. This man took a risk of being rejected and ridiculed to show us love. He didn't have much but what he did have he felt led to share with us. When I looked up I saw God in his eyes and my heart was able to open up again and remember what we're here for, what the free store is here for, why AID exists.
I couldn't even count how many homeless people I've helped; but, I can count how many have helped me - 2. The first was Joe, he was a special guy who used to always go on and on about how he was going to receive thousands of dollars for something. After years of helping him, the money (we thought was made up) came and he donated all of it to our ministry, every penny!
"And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, 'Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.'" Luke 21:1-4

Hey guys, this is an emergency. I need to know of anyone who has trucks or vans available in the ANtelope Valley. My friend Dani and her family run a Kennel north of Lake Hughes, which, as we all know, is on fire. The flames are getting close enough that they are concerned for the well being of their animals and are looking at options to get them moved. I am more than happy to cover gas expenses if you are willing to help us out.
Please let me know as soon as possible. I haven't got much information myself, but as it becomes available to me, I will be sure to let those who are willing and able know."

So let’s talk about a common ground for the common good, including people of faith, people who are spiritual but not religious, or secular but with moral sensibilities. I want to get over our fear of each other and embrace each other’s best moral values and find where we can work together.
