I'm travelling to Georgia for tiny-hirl (girl friend style) next month. Anything happening in the Alpharetta area that I shouldn't miss? It's the weekend of the 12th-14th and we are going with another couple from Tennessee. Anything (not too wild or expensive) within 30-50 mies would be great.

This is an unusual post for Sacred Sunday. It's an half hour presentation by an Atheist  that should remind us (yes, us believers too) how to believe in whatever we do believe in. It's NOT an attack on Mr. Romney or on religious beliefs as much as a wake up call.

If you don't have an half hour to spare I'll sum it up as best I can.

comments and criticisms are welcome and moderation will be as moderate as I can muster (lol)

My circle count keeps going up and my follower list keeps growing and the half dozen or so people who regularly engage with me is absolutely awesome. Why then are my plusses and re-shares and comments so low.
I got to thinking about that and the only other constant in the equation is that my "crap circle" keeps growing too. Maybe since I haven't been as engaging my own self it has left me out of the loops circles, so to speak?
So I turned the slider back up this morning.
Yikes!
But that probably isn't it after all. It's probably just that I'm boring the dickens out of you all. Or maybe it's my anti-anti-censorship views. I don't know but I'd sure be glad to hear opinions and/or suggestions.
One thing I did find out/remember.
Holy Cow. I know I follow the best people on the G. I'm astounded and amazed and deeply grateful for the peeps I found in my following list. I mean, SERIOUSLY ! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I wil absolutely try to live up to the awesomeness that a list like that deserves.

I have close to 30K followers - each one of you, separately and together, can make a difference.

Here's what I am asking: find a painting you like - AFAIC it doesn't even have to be a G+ artist - post the image or link and put #PaintingOfTheDay  in the post. You can even share this post forward and put #PaintingOfTheDay  in your header.

Thanks. As an artist fighting to make art more visible here on G+ I would really appreciate it.

This is a painting by Picasso, very traditional old school, but it prompted an unexpected response from me the first time I saw it in the flesh (so to speak).

“How Do You Talk to An Angel” hit #1 on the Billboard Top 40 in 1992, transforming lead singer Jamie Walters and The Heights into #onehitwonders . Jamie Walters never looked back, however, and hit the Billboard Top 40 for a second time three years later with his hit, “Hold On” that reached #16 on the Billboard Top 40. That makes Walters a two-time one-hit wonder or essentially a person who had two Top 40 songs with two completely different bands.

Most people are peaceful and respectful of other people.
Some people are different. Christians, Muslims,Jews,Atheists and yes even Buddhists can be screwed up.
Mormons have a rich and bloody history of violence, bigotry and terrorism extending well into the last parts of the 20th century.

Brigham Young introduced the doctrine known as "blood atonement", regarding unpardonable sin, or sin for which Jesus Christ's atonement does not apply. He taught that a person could only atone for such sins by giving up his or her life. Various church leaders since Young have taught likewise. Bruce R. McConkie stated that "this doctrine can only operate in a day when there is no separation of church and state and when the power to take life is vested in the ruling theocracy as was the case in the day of Moses."

A new pastor moved into town and went out one Saturday to visit his parishioners.

All went well until he came to one house. It was obvious that someone was home, but no one came to the door even after he had knocked several times.

Finally, he took out his card, wrote on the back "Revelation 3:20" and stuck it in the door. (Revelation 3:20 reads: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he will with me.")

The next day, as he was counting the offering he found his card in the collection plate. Below his message was a notation "Genesis 3:10" ("And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked.").

This is terrible,My Lovely Lady, Lady Kira Raven,(We live in Oklahoma).I am Lord Charles Raven, and I am currently on deployment in Afghanistan running convoys through the badlands. After we got married we lived in Germany where she sewed, and painted her own pavilion and worked at the army wood craft shop to make all the poles and the center wheel. She painted the pavilion blue and with a sun and stars design, it is freaking awesome. This morning she posted that someone stole our trailer full of our SCA equipment out of our yard, including this tent that she hand crafted and has had for years. If anyone knows anyone in Oklahoma, please share this around in case they see any SCA equipment or trailers. The trailer was a little red 2 wheel ,Box trailer with a pirate flag painted on one side, and our medieval crest painted on the other side.

My point is that unless you are one of the few score of undecided voters (who will actually decide who wins this year) then you might want to spend the next fourty odd days thinking about your local elections.

Social Era / Culture: The Rise Of The American Ignorati
#politics #culture #socialera  #ignorati
“We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.”  -- Benjamin Franklin. Others say, “stupidity is a condition while ignorance is a choice.” If so, in 21st Century America, there is an epidemic of the condition and a mass stampede towards the choice.  There’s even a new name for for it! Ignorati - not to be confused with its Italian literal translation meaning of “ignored”, ignorati is closer to a pop culture antithetic play on on the word “illuminati”.

īgnōrātī -- “a person or group that is willfully ignorant, or woefully uninformed and forces their ignorant views on others regardless of fact, in spite of evidence.”

In general, the ignorati are described as individuals who, despite their education, power, wealth, or influence, remain anti-intellectual, uninformed and prone to making serious errors of fact when discussing science and other technical, political or social matters. They rather believe in fabled-doctrine than observable reality and resort to magical thinking and scapegoating with alarming ease. Thus, the ignorati can usually be found furiously adding fuel to moral panics and disinformation campaigns of intolerance, prejudice and bigotry in the name of god or country.  For a given individual or group to be considered part of the ignorati, he/she must regularly provide groupthink scripted opinions or report on matters they do not understand and have clearly made no attempt to understand. They are usually fiscally self-serving, unaware of their own privilege, and remain void of empathy for social issues or the plight and misfortunes of others. They believe wanton exploitation of the planet (and everyone or anything on it) yields endless bounty only for themselves and that this predatory activity is a god given right.  In fact, they refuse to acknowledge or take responsibility for causing anyone's problems in the world and when confronted it is their common tactic to reframe observable reality with obfuscation and label open civil discourse as direct personal attacks. While the ignorati can be found deep within every race and religion on the planet, in America they comprise arguably 50% of the population. Politically they are mostly Republicans (in numbers), but plenty of Democrats and Independents qualify for the title as well. These individuals firmly believe that willful-ignorance is their inalienable right and education erodes their freedom to remain so.

Dangerous Ideas
Science Kills more than Religion

You know what you think?  You think that Religion is responsible for so much of the violence in the world. If you think that, you might be right. But I’mma gonna need me some evidence. Cause I’ve been looking around, and I’ve found out some pretty wild stuff.

The largest single war, WWII killed somewhere between 40m and 72m people in about 6 years.  That war was about a lot of things. But two things are pretty important about it. One, there was a hell of a lot of scientific advancement in it, remember it started with propeller planes and ended in Nuclear Bombs. Yey for science!  Two, there was a WHOLE scientific movement, call Eugenics (you might call it molecular biology these days) that was a pretty big cause of that war.

Yup. Scientific belief were instrumental in the rise of Hitler and the carrying on of WWII. Really, that science meme has a lot to be ashamed about. Luckily, no one ever talks about it.

In the slightly less than 100 years of the Crusades, about 1m to 3m people died and lest you say there was less people in the world, it was about 0.3%–2.3% of the world population. WWII was between 1.7%–3.1%. What were the Crusades about? A lot of things, but one of the big causes was religion. Religion has a lot to be ashamed about. Almost as much as science.

Of course, two examples doth not the truth make. And really, wars are always about power – see the Mongols, perhaps the best killers the World has ever known. You might want to see a great table on the Wiki about wars and their relative shittyness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_and_anthropogenic_disasters_by_death_toll

Ultimately, this stuff about Religion being bad because of death is rubbish. Although the Inquisition was pretty shit, if you look at them in detail, you’ll find that actually and ironically the inquisition was the start of rationalism and the end of religion.

White as the snow but black as night

White as the snow but black as night,
I beg all visitors that be,
"Close the door and turn off the light."

In the grip of ambivalence
I've often winced and cried aloud.
Asked to bestow but a few pence
I've hid within this bedding shroud.

Beyond this place of ruffled frills,
Looms the horror of work and strife
But while me mum is paying bills
I'm freed to sleep away my life.

It matters not that you berate,
Or plead with me to set some goal,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

Bwahahahah - I read a post from a newspaper article about a scientific study this morning. It was all of about 300 words maybe. The majority of the comments were indignant arguments about why the headline was obviously wrong. Obviously, because nobody had ever experienced their wonderfully superior version of the subject matter.

The majority of the comments were indignant arguments about why the headline was obviously wrong. Obviously, because nobody had ever experienced their wonderfully superior version of the subject matter.
I eventually made a comment alluding to the brevity of the article and that I thought that the commentators might not have bothered to read it. Silly me! The next reply was from a guy who did read it. His opinion was that the scientists were ignorant and lazy. He then cast aspersions on the educational system of his country.
My apologies to all of the tl/dr's and that other guy too. I hope you enjoy your coffee and have a great day. (more likely tea in this case)

In Love

In Love

I am in Love,
Not in the typical sense
As most people know it,
But it is a place where
I live and have my being,
A place from where my every thought,
Word, and deed originate.
It is a place where I take refuge
And solace from a world that does not
Seem to know this Love.

It's not about "free software" so much as software that doesnt infringe on our freedom

It's not about "free software" so much as software that doesnt infringe on our freedom
In a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies, it is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology on our lives, and the importance of ensuring technology isn't used to limit us, but rather to take us further along a path of opportunity, innovation and freedom for all people.

It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious. - Who done it ?

Today was pro-USA demonstration in Benghazi condemning the attacks on the embassy.

Everyone needs to see this, please share this. I have a feeling it will be swept under the rug by the major news outlets.

We cannot lump all the people of the middle east in with terrorists and extremists. I have known several Muslims in my life, and I know many Christians who are infinitely more radical and prone to violence than they are.
There are over a billion Muslims. You cannot say one view point is shared by that many people, it simply isn't true.

To all the Occupy people, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take some time to register to vote, if you have not done so already, at OCCUPY A VOTING BOOTH.

I know a good many of you folks are jaded about the entire process, but democracy and self-government in general is and has always been a somewhat messy and imperfect process. It took 30 years of social and political DIGRESSION to get to our currently dysfunctional state. It's going to take some years and sustained effort to regain what has been lost and go beyond that to keep moving our society FORWARD.

The Democratic Party is not the standard-bearer of progressive change that it has been and could be again. But frankly, neither is the Occupy movement. For those folks who want to sit on the sidelines and maintain some illusory sense of ideological "purity," all I can say is that if you think it's hard to take on the power and influence of Wall Street now, it will be devastatingly harder with a Romney/Ryan administration intent on plunging us into a new "Gilded Age."

The correct view of religion

There's no reason science and spirituality can't coexist and learn from each other. A great example of rationalism, more people should accept both into their daily lives instead of spending so much time trying to prove that only way to live is with spirituality or science exclusively.
If thinking like a liberal is so bad does that mean not thinking, lika a conservative, is good ?

Why Religion?

Why Religion?
Many skeptics think that religion is a waste of time—or worse. I tend to agree. I am a Christian, but I don't consider myself a particularly religious person. Christianity is much more than just religion.

"Age simply doesn't enter into it! The older the friend, the more he is valued, particularly when he shows so visibly the characteristics that we all look for in friends. You have only to look at a genuine teddy's face to see at once the loyalty, common sense, and above all, dependability behind it."

I wonder why it seems so difficult to find information about this from independent sources. I tried googling and wikkipediaing both GIC and Keshe. The foundations and related ideas are interesting to be sure but the difficulty of finding info from outside sources is downright fascinating. My conspiracy theory radar is going nuts...

I believe in Bacon

I believe in Bacon
"It is true, that a little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion; for while the mind of man looketh upon second causes scattered, it may sometimes rest in them, and go no further; but when it beholdeth the chain of them confederate, and linked together, it must needs fly to Providence and Deity."

Title

Sacred Flower of the Incas #sacredsunday

Sacred Flower of the Incas #sacredsunday
The Inca legend associated with the Cantua is the tale of two kings named Illimani and Illampu, and their sons. Both kings were powerful and wealthy rulers of a vast country in the Kollasuyo region (today's Bolivian Altiplano), and each had a beloved son whom the people held in great esteem. But as time passed, the kings became irritated at each other's prosperity, and eventually one of them attacked the other.
During the battle, the two kings mortally wounded each other, and were carried away. Each on his dying bed called his son and had him vow to avenge him, even if each son had been opposed to the war in the first place. Bound by their pledge, the sons prepared and led a second war even though they held no grudge against each other. History repeated, and each son inflicted a fatal wound on the other.
But instead of harsh words, the dying sons generously forgave each other, and asked that their servants place them side by side on the green grass of the battlefield. Then appeared Pachamama, Goddess of Fertility, who told the young kings before they died that they shouldn't have suffered from their fathers' unjustified enmity. To punish their dead fathers, their stars fell from the sky, and became the snow-covered mountains still named Illimani and Illampu, which are the highest peaks in the region.
The rivers of their slowly-melting snow are their tears of regret, and fertilize the valleys. The Cantua bloom symbolizes the people's unity, and bears the colours of the two kings' sons (red and yellow), as well as green (standing for hope).

I'd like to take credit for this beautiful shot - but thanks to the beautiful Hope Jones for this.

I would like to thank a "higher power" for this great long weekend off. Individuals acting independently in their own interests owe so much from health, wealth and family time to the brave ones who went before us. Good hard working people who banded together to make things better for themselves, each other and the economy and country as a whole. Thank You to the labor unions of America.
