Bwaahahaha.... It's not that easy to find stuff for "Then and Now"
Gilbert O'Sullivan  His most successful recording period was between 1970 and 1980, though he has since recorded nine studio albums up to 2011's "Gilbertville". Speaking in 2009 he said; "I write pop songs. End of story. That's all I wanted to do. That's all I want to do. And that's all I continue to want to do. I have no interest in just touring, and living in the past." And YES - Alone Again (Naturally) was featured on the Simpsons (FTW)
I think waybe this should have gone into rock and pop, but, well listen to it and decide for yourself...

Google+ and the "Long Conversation"
How a Social Network "Diaspora" Builds Culture

One cannot, I think, understand a social network without understanding culture.  With Facebook, one must understand a two-way road that began with culture being "exported" from the real world to the online world (via the connections to real world friends, family, acquaintances, and colleagues), and then "feeding back" into the real world (e.g. "Like Us on Facebook").

However, Facebook isn't a culture in its own right.  It attaches itself to culture, but for the most part is not a culture in itself.  Google+, on the other hand, has since it earliest days been a place where a true social network culture of its own has been born, aspect by aspect.

In trying to understand and explain the multi-faceted culture of Google+, I've discovered a source of insight in a most unexpected place: the book Invisible Powers: Vodou in Haitian Life and Culture edited by Claudine Michel and Patrick Bellegarde-Smith (http://goo.gl/zuhA9) and published under the auspices of The Congress of Santa Barbarba (KOSANBA) and the Center for Black Studies.

In Chapter 10, "How Houngans Use the Light from Distant Stars", LeGrace Benson speaks of a "Long Conversation" or "Long Theater".  This refers to the process of cultural exchange and assimilation, whereby every cultural/religious influence disseminated through contact with and between the slave Diaspora groups of Haiti (different tribes; Christian, Islamic, and indigenous African traditions; Britain and France; etc...) become syncretized into the expression of the new emerging culture.

It's possible to see how this "Long Conversation" also plays into the "culture" of Google+, which rather than experiencing the "mass migration" from Facebook that some Google marketers might have liked it to, has instead also experienced a "Diaspora" of those either self-exiled from other social networks, or seeking to fill some "void" in their social networking space unfulfilled by other networks.

This "Diaspora" has also bred a culture with its own etiquette, norms, terminology, "representatives", "ambassadors", "apologists", "anthropologists", etc...

Some examples:

Etiquette: Google+'s community is far more inclined to favor those who create and curate content on site over those who merely broadcast content from other sites (i.e. "Tweeters"),  and those who share their passions over those who spend most of their time sharing their "mundane" interests and activities (i.e. "Facebookers").

Norms: When resharing from others, it is customary to give a "hat tip" (h/t) or to identify the source with "via".  Thoughtful responses are preferred over +1's or one-off filler replies like "LOL" or "TY".

Terminology: "Circling" other "Plussers"; being an "engager"; Daria Musk's "G+NIUSES"; "Plus" as a verb i.e. "Plus Your Business"; the negative "Ghost Town" given the positive connotation of a place for "spirited" discussion and interaction; the "Round Head Tribe" (people with round profile pics, itself playing off the concept of "Circles" and inspired by the efforts of Patrick Sharpe); "Hangchors" like Sarah Hill and Melissa Carlson; etc...

Representatives / Ambassadors / Apologists: Robert Scoble's fascination with Plus (despite his renewed fascination with Facebook); Mike Elgan's passionate defense of Google+ engagement levels and his use of Plus as a blogging medium; Mark Traphagen or AJ Kohn's emphasis on Plus's SEO value; Johan Horak's colorful use of "racy" metaphors; Anita Law's take on Google+ as a "salon" (a place for intellectuals, philosophers, and the like to gather as colleagues for discussion and lively banter), Ronnie Bincer's emphasis on Plus's increasing YouTube integration; etc...

All of this emerges from the "Long Conversation" of each person contributing to a "Stream" of ideas and discussions, often building on each other.  One person who favors Apple products might discuss whether the new Windows tablet is a threat to iPad; the next person to share it, a fan of Google, might discuss whether it is a threat to Android; the next, a fan of Microsoft, might discuss it as the "re-emergence of Microsoft" or a disappointing failure.

An article about Facebook getting far more engagement than Google+ might prompt one person to question the methodology, the next to question whether the two should even be compared directly, and the next to suggest that Google+ is more in competition with Twitter for the "interest graph", depending on where they see Google+ fitting into their own social networking habits.  Each is, in their own way, embracing G+ as its own culture, needing to be understood on its own terms, and built on a "Stream" of interactions.

What began as one discussion, can easily segue into other more-or-less related discussions, even spinning off whole new threads, which in turn may spin-off other threads, which may even lead back to the original thread that started the process in the first place, all contributing to the "Long Conversation" in different ways.

My experience leads me to conclude that Google+ is no mere social network, nor simply an "online community", but a very real and sophisticated, online culture, perhaps unlike any other (most closely comparable, I suspect, to the early days of Twitter, or the Reddit community).  I embrace the part I play in helping to extend the "Long Conversation" across time and (cyber)space, as do many others, all contributing to arguably the most passionate internet community today.

But of course, a culture is more than one person.  How do you, my fellow Plussers, view the "culture" of Google+, and your own part in the ongoing interactions and exchanges that constitute our "Long Conversation"?

Monti was, and still seems to be a total trip. From his days on Carson and the like he was always a consumate performer. These days he still works a bit in Vegas while blogging and working on a TV "treatment" He also performs weddings. (naturally)
Listen closely and you might hear his name droppped by the likes of Elvis Costello and the Pet Shop Boys. Of course no pop-star can be dissed by the Simpsons crowd, so keep an eye out for him there too.

I am honored that my print is on display at the A.R.E.

I hope my print will help inspire, in some small way, one to look within to discover and pursue their Mind, Body Spirit journey.

This moment that has taken a life time to achieve. When the A.R.E. initially contacted I was overwhelmed with their words to me. When they told me that my images had a spiritual connection to the Edgar Cayce readings I was stunned. That my images are used with the spiritual sayings of this great soul, well, there's really nothing to say except that I am greatly humbled. Those that know me personally know the path I have taken. The path is not always easy but it leads us to state of Grace.

I know that God puts us all here on this Earth for good reason.
We each have our gifts and that's what we should focus on each and every day.

I wish to thank Jennie Taylor Martin and the entire A.R.E. organization for their ongoing support of my art.

One day I will reveal to you the entire story about the "Tree on the Water".
The story is amazing and beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

I thank you all for supporting The Arts!

A tl;dr summary of my circle management

A tl;dr summary of my circle management
I circle back. I got in the habit back in the beta (pronounced "better") days. Sure, I've uncircled hundreds of people for a variety of reasons but I came here for variety and that's exactly what I have.
I used to have "transition" circles that people would migrate down to. Overposters was for peeps who might not be offensive but were irritating just by so totally overdoing it. My Crapcircle was for rude, obnoxious, or bullying peeps; regardless of politics or faith. If you circled me I circled back and put you right into general circulation. You then might move down and perhaps back up but lots eventually just got tossed.
I don't follow that plan any more. When I see something, or a ton of something that irritates me I take a peek at your profile. Then it's either stay (most common) or go. It's a snap judgement, no looking back. I don't usually make any comment either. You have every right to be as irritating s you wish. It's not like my approval or lack thereof will get you to change.
I just dropped someone. It was not the first time I considered it but it was the first time I looked at the profile. I just don't get why somebody from Merry Olde England would feel the need to post 20+ anti-Obama and or anti-Democrat posts per day. There was not even one post that I could find about any other subject. No other politics, no bullying, not even any kitties....
BTW - he was in the overposter circle so perhaps it's just an OCD kinda thing.

UPDATE: 3/21/13 - 24 hours after caps were put in place, Google Plus has changed the restrictions on Animated GIFs from shown in the graph below. Larger and longer GIF's are being allowed in stream and on cover profile photos than stated in this graphic.  The specifics are yet to be determined. Thanks again to Yasuo Maeda for the head-up.

New Animated GIF Restrictions On Google+ Instituted

As of Yesterday evening, the 19th of March, new restrictions have been implemented by Google on Animated GIF sizes that will be able to be uploaded to your Google+ Stream and Profile Cover Photo.  Apparently some preexisting Animated GIFs have been affected by this change and are no longer working.  A big thanks goes out to Yasuo Maeda for creating the chart below indicating the maximum size of an animated GIF that can be uploaded and it's representative length in frames.

The VIC-20 computer of the 1980's, had a 5V supply bus which happens to be the same as that used for radio control servos for models. Servos are set to a degree of rotation by a 1.0 to 2.0 mS pulse which could be programmed by the computer using a machine code subroutine for speed. By combining 3 of these servos it was possible to make a printer / plotter and still have a massive 1.5 k of memory left over to program it to do patterns. It was published in an Electronics Today International magazine in 1984. I was a bit niftier with the maths in those days. And I knew how to use string and gum to make things. Printers have advanced a little from these times.

Actually, looking at it, this is not the low pressure ink stylus I used, but a small light and photocell to scan things.  I remember doing a scan of Mona Lisa and printing it back later. So printer, scanner and copier in one, 1980's style. Held together by tape and dust.

The TV adaptation was a little low budget, but the computer animations of the Guide were all hand drawn and animated!

If you want the best incarnation of the Hitch Hiker's Guide, the original radio series is by far the best.  Beg, borrow, steal or torrent the CD set.

We'll not mention the truly appalling film :)

The 1914 "Peerless Quartet" version is quite listenable.
While many consider this one of the earliest anti-war protest songs in American history one only has to look back to Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller and Beethovens 9th to see that mankind has used music to express a yearning for peace for a long time. (Ode to Joy)

Your thoughts ?

Your thoughts ?
Sacramentalism is merely the Incarnation extended, just as the Church is. No a priori biblical or logical case can be made against a literal Eucharist on the grounds that matter is inferior to spirit and/or indicative of a stunted, primitive, "pagan" spirituality or some such similar negative judgment. If Christ could become Man, He can surely will to become actually and truly present in every sense in bread and wine, once consecrated. #sacredsunday

I'm calling on all service related people, especially in the DC area to cut back 10-20% on service to all members of congress. If a senator visits your restaurant just make him (or her) wait an extra 10 minutes and be sure to let hot stuff get cold and vice versa. If a member of the house needs a limo, tell them they have to wait until tomorrow. You're cutting back to help the economy.
Please share this and help it go viral.

I know that the platform gets all the praise and blame when people discuss social media. Facebook is this and G+ is that - yadda yadda yadda. The real difference, the sizzle, if you will is the people and content that you get to experience.

[Mini-Memoirs: How I traded three slices of pizza for a duet with a homeless woman, and three of the best hugs of my life.]

I sat in my car as the sobs rolled through my body again and again like tiny earthquakes, shaking me and breaking me apart with each wave, too paralyzed to move. Exhausted after an hour, I wiped my face and reentered the world, careful to first cross the street to avoid the shadowy camp of a homeless person I'd noticed when I parked.

But before I got far, I heard her earnest voice rise up in the dark to accompany the melodic crooning of Vanessa Williams streaming out her handheld radio. "Sometimes the sun goes round the moon..." I felt a tug and crossed the street. I used to love that song when I was a girl.

"That looks like pizza!" the disheveled vagrant exclaimed, referring to the box of leftovers noticeable in my hand as I approached. The edge of hope and desperation in her voice was palpable.
"It is! I was wondering if you'd be willing to trade me it for the opportunity to sing this song with you."

Without another word we both jumped into our unexpected duet mid-lyric, our lungs powered by the frosty San Franciscan air. "And now we're standing face to face. Isn't this world a crazy place? Just when I thought our chance had passed..."

She broke at the end of the chorus. "The man of my dreams just walked into my life!" she exuberated. Her face was beaming with the glow of new love.
"Ah, I am so happy to hear that! My heart is really hurting right now. I was just sitting in my car crying for the past hour."
"Oh, honey, I'm so sorry," she cooed lovingly.

She walked out from behind her shopping cart to wrap me in an embrace. Without hesitation, I abandoned any classist reservations about hygiene, safety, or questioning onlookers and rushed to meet her halfway. Homeless status be damned. I really needed a hug right then, and this woman was taking me in like a castoff, listless kitten; like I was the one between us who needed help. I guess I did right then.

She pulled me in and I'd by lying if I said it wasn't one of the best hugs I've ever had. She held me there a long time and breathed with me, let me cry, clucked reassuring words in my ears, just stood there with me--human to human, two strangers in the night with hearts that beat, broken and blooming.

We huddled in the dark and spoke candidly for another twenty minutes. I asked her about her new love, her life, her family, her history. She slipped in and out of lucidity, alternating between talks of fallen angels and Harley Davidsons, Isis and alcoholism. But she kept coming back with comforting words for me and my sullen spirit. "Kricket with a K," she said her name was. She told me to light a candle. She was 43 and stood in the shadows.

"Sometimes the very thing you're looking for/
is the one thing that you can't see."

Steve Earle wrote this for Joan Baez. He put it on his new album and I offer it as a nice #sacredsunday wake up call.

Imagine this as your very first day "on the job".
This is the funniest thing I have ever heard. It was the first thing I ever purchased over the internet. It probably was the one thing that got me hooked on public radio. One word of warning - squirrel lovers should pass on this one.

A story about a song. A pretty good story on it's own too.

The Inimitable Ray Wylie Hubbard tells the story of his inspiration behind his classic song "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother". This was filmed at Jerry Jeff walker's Birthday Bash at the Paramount Theater in Downtown Austin Texas

I love a good story. Here is a quickie that tells about the inspiration for a famous song. If history was taught this way perhaps we would not have to keep making the same bad choices over and over again.

Yes - that is my commentary on the sequestration.  Who knows, maybe this time will be different.
