So the guy who started the big bang theory was a Catholic priest. I love the picture of him with Einstein.

  1. The Pope at the time loved the theory, but Lemaitre begged him to not talk about it so it could take root in the scientific community first.

  3. More that Hubble put numbers to the hypothesis. Einstein was intrigued by Lemaitre's idea, but didn't think it had calculable merit. I've never read that Lemaitre ran into Schroedinger, but that would have been an interesting pair to have met.

Ultimately, Hubble had observational data that he could pair with the hypothesis of an expanding universe to link back to a single point (largely, before him, the Galaxies were considered to be 'fixed' and/or gravitationally driven.)

    Good reading here.

Lemaitre has been a fascination of mine since converting to Catholicism a few years ago. I'd heard of him before, but I've read a lot about him recently. It's always interesting to me that so many of the movers and shakers in Catholicism have advanced degrees in the sciences.
