Where Man Meets Nature

I snapped this yesterday at a church parking lot.  I have no idea why they bricked up the hollow of the tree like this (if anyone has seen this before or knows the purpose, feel free to mention it in the comments), but it's a fascinating marriage of man and nature.

  1. I've seen - and photographed - this phenomenon on a much larger scale.

It is an old method used to try and save the tree when it's severely damaged (in the case o' my shot, by lightning) - keeping out water/weather from getting in and causing rot.
Your shot is interesting in that it appears to have been there long enough that the tree is "absorbing" the repair - though being that near the root seems an odd injury. Like trees in some cemeteries that "eat" tombstones, the repair here may one day disappear all together!

  2. If the tree lives long enough to cover all the bricks, someone someday will be really surprised when attempting to remove the stump with a chainsaw.
