Okay - now that the fireworks have settled down I'm going to throw my two cents in. Please feel free to either not care what I think or be completely in favor or butt-hurt beyond belief. Like, comment or ignore to your hearts content.
You like your stars and bars, fine.I think we mostly agree that it's not acceptable to enshrine them in governmental places. Also there seems to be consensus that if you want one on your own flagpole, car or tattooed on your tush, you must have the right to do so.
Understand this though, like it or not, the symbolism it brings to your life is not the same as it is for others. If you are going to claim your heritage then you ought to not whine or throw temper tantrums when other people exercise their free speech rights and claim their own history.
The same thing goes for you who don't currently support the rights of people who want to fly their flags proudly. You don't have to like it, and you don't have to like them. You really should be glad that they are able to "show their true colors" even if those colors aren't yours.
Yes ! I said GLAD. You should be glad that peeps who probably are white and who just might be racist, and could have extremely (in your opinion) toxic and harmful opinions about you and/or your family - GLAD that they are entitled to say so. To say so openly and with pride. It's a heavy but worthwhile price to pay for having the same rights that they do
I agree with that rant!! If you don't like what's being said..you have the freedom to NOT listen!! Exercise that freedom!!
ReplyDeleteMost do not comprehend that the protection of others' rights under the constitution is also the protection of their own! It's odd, and troubling, how many people are quick to want to obstruct others' privilege, but retain their own, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It has the other advantage of making assholes easy to identify.
ReplyDeleteIt's just natural. I think it's okay to say (and I do) hey you, I think you're a turd bucket. People aren't usually offended by honest disagreement. I even think it's important to go ahead and speak up. What's not cool is to say STFU. You don't have a right to an opinion or to express it because it's different from my own.
ReplyDeleteI think we should celebrate our diversity. Though I will plead guilty to sometimes wanting to celebrate it with a big stick.
Darion Jackman That is not a bad thing. I didn't want to include it in my post though. If they don't understand that point then I see no reason to teach it to them. lol
ReplyDeleteYep- it's just my opinion that they are assholes (or simply ignorant). I support all people's rights to believe what they want, as long as their beliefs do not trample anyone else's freedoms.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little kid they told me I could grow up to be anything I wanted. I only wonder now and then if asshole wasn't the best thing I could have chosen ?
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I'm proud of it - but I try to be aware of it at least. And FTR I've found in my life that IRL anyway, life amongst people who think I'm an a-hole is neither avoidable or often boring.
I try not to dwell too much on what other people think of me. I've spent my entire life gathering the traits that make me who I am... You think I'm an asshole? That's fine... Move along... I probably don't like you much either ;)
ReplyDeleteNo- I really don't Darion Jackman I was just trying to point out that I think that I am (on occasion). I don't think generally that most people are though. Even the ones who I disagree with strongly (which doesn't seem generally to include you) They are just wherever they are at this point in their lives and most likely are just fine people, good people and simply to my thoughts, wrong about one thing or another.
ReplyDeleteNo- I do know some A-holes for sure, but I doubt that you're one of them. ~ As far as liking me ? No biggie, Just as long as you remember that I'm always right about everything and damn near perfect in every way, you can hang around.~
1:( the ~ tilde marks are how I indicate sarcasm when I bother to remember to use them)
2:(see, I told you up front that I was one)
3::I'm cross-posting this on faceboo. ~That's where I keep most of my real a-holes~
Eek- I meant the "you think I'm an ahole" thing in kind of a general way! It wasn't directed at you specifically- sorry!
ReplyDeleteWe seem to agree on most points which puts you squarely in my "not a complete a-hole" category... For now... chuckle
