It started as an argument at a Kansas City bar about what the saddest music in the world is. There were some good contenders – George Jones, Flamenco, Argentine tango, and Fado. On that night, Fado, the mournful traditional music of Portugal, was the winner.

Fado is traditional folk music native to Portugal and influenced by its many former colonies in Brazil and parts of Africa. The word translates as “fate.” The music is tender, melancholic, ballads about lost love, the sea, being double crossed, being younger.
