I shot this for a weekly project community. The theme was "Shadows" and with Halloween coming up I wanted the "dead" king to be missing his shadow. I posted it with the title Checkmate to emphasize the obvious.

I shot this once with the king and again without him (and his shadow) then used the GIMP to paste him onto the image without the shadow. I blurred around the base of the king just a little (5px wide or so) and converted to b&w.

Any suggestions ?
Lighting, composition, lens, dof etc.

  1. I'm not familiar with gimp. I use PS CC. But if you layered both images on separate layers and used a reverse layer mask, you can erase the part of the mask that covers the King's shadow. No need to blur the image. The light source could be put further back to make sure the shadows of the rook, knight, and bishop are at the same angle.

  2. Teddy My processing skills have progressed some since then so while I am not (at all) proficient, I at least understand what you mean about the layers/mask and agree.
As to the shadows - YES ! What is wrong with me ? I should have thought of that. Great reply and thanks.
