  1. "There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people." Admiral Adama, Battlestar Galactica.

  2. I'm wondering what others know about this proposed bill -- is this for real? Don't want to be an alarmist, but this brings to mind images of Farenheit 451. Guess we better start memorizing our favorite books...

  3. Congress needs to plan for many eventualities. Sometimes people get in panic mode, because they think the just-in-case laws to help FEMA in case there is a natural disaster of an intensity requiring the declaration of Martial law;
    do a better job apprehending home-grown-terrorists
    are suddenly going to be the law of the land for everyone.

    What we should be more concerned about are the error rates in what really is every day events.
    Social Security Administration says they have a 5% error rate ... multiply that times 300 million people ... that's how many cannot get social security benefits because of SSA errors.
    Border patrol enforcement has a job of keeping out undocumented aliens, well guess what, about 40,000 real Americans go into the deportation process each year, because they are unable to get at documentation to prove they are in fact who they say they are.

    There are lots of systemic problems with our systems. Patching the broken systems with new laws, is often easier than redesigning a better mouse-trap. So long as people panic over the patches, and do not get consensus around identifying what is broken, and a better fix, this reality is not going to improve.

  5. um ~ well I can't argue with you there but I really like the 4th amendment the way it is. I like most of them and and am getting to the point where I think it's time for the movers and the shakers to do a bit of moving and shaking themselves. The legitimacy of the government depends on the support of the governed. I find it hard to be supportive with a boot on my neck. I guess I just feel threatened that I (or you) could be held in secret without a warrent or charges indefinitely.
