The best thing I ever learned from being deployed is how the less I have, the happier I truly am. I mean, there are limits, but really, truly, the only "things" I'd be sad to lose are my Stanley thermos, my Costa Rican coffee sock (so I can make coffee directly into the thermos as long as I have hot water) a pen, some paper, and a few mementos (the sole value of each being the association they have with a particular person).
It's such a cliche, the whole, "the things you own come to own you," bit, but there is such an amazing freedom in the simplicity of less.
