Let me have it. Be brutal. The whole point is to get comfortable with criticism and that means dishing it out too.

Shot with a old cheap camera and processed in FastStone Viewer with way more "added features" than is reasonable. So ask away or just go for it, your choice.

  1. Hi Ted. Nice capture of a sun rise over a harbour ( would be my best guess) However some things bother me. One is the chromatic fringing on the wharf. I am not sure where your focus was? the wharf is a leading line to where? and your birds are flying out of the frame. The colours are beautiful and there is an image there somewhere. The wharf could lead your line of sight up to the land mass and back around. so that you go back into the image but as the birds are flying out it seems to all lead you out of the image. It also seems quite soft but that is not always a deal breaker as it gives the image a very "Turner" feel.

  2. Cheryl Muirson Well done ! Your reply caused me to go back, take another look and add to the list of"problems: that I had. I'm impressed. That part about leading the eye around and back in particular was excellent.
I agree with every point save one. (partly) The birds flying out wasn't entirely intentional. Once I had them though I liked the feeling of loss or that they can escape while we are left behind.
Of course they don't ever cooperate well,do they ? And that one really does spoil things. I'd have cloned him out probably if I were presenting it anywhere but here (I hope, anyway).
So - thanks for your reply. It was almost exactly the sort of thing I wanted to see. Just maybe a little better even that I had hoped for.

  3. I am a teacher so hoped that it would give you some food for thought. I do know that you can't control the direction of flight and do agree that it really is only the last bird right on the edge of frame that does drag your eye out. The rest work very well. I am trained in giving the critique sandwich. praise then a little bit of meat to work on and then a praise. So I think you agree that I did just that. You don't have to agree with the person critiquing and you did do that. Thank goodness for the clone tool. In the old days in the dark room they would have cut the damned thing out physically

  4. What else could I have said to make this a better critique session for you Ted Kelly? I can't do the totally tough critique as I have to clarify . what I was saying. By the way the birds on the thirds line was well captured.

  5. That's an interesting question.
I think the best response is that it was perfect, One must always leave them thirsting for more, eh ?
    also because-
If you leave some room for others to chime in it can bring out more participation. One might wonder why the fringing is so pronounced and another ask about the split toning sort of look, etc...

  7. Brutal you say, ok then, in short, it wont do to well in comps,
There is little interest in the image, in comps it needs a wow factor,
There is to much sky , skys are nomally placed on the upper third line, ( google rule of thirds) if the sky had drama or more detail, different story, the building is a distraction and not needed,, building does not add. Interest to the scene, if your going to frame images keep it simple, a 1 mm fine line is all that is needed, your frame is to in your face, and another distractiom, to thick, you need to keep all the attention on the image, bottom right section may be the only area that you could use try recropping to this area and repost,

  8. Bravo Ron B ! That was quick, on point and fair. That's the kind of reaction that actually might get someone to go back and really look at their work.
Well - maybe after their tears dried up that is...
    lol
