I am confused – the first sequence ends with 36. However, in the reprint below, 36 is missing. The first digit (and indeed, only digit) of the first number is 3. The first digit of the third is 4, of the fifth is 5, so, continuing in this fashion, one might expect the seventh number to start with 6. Every third number is a square number in declining sequence (7^2 then 6^2) but there are not enough numbers on here to state this as a definite sequence. The third number ends in 9 and every second number after this ends in 9, even though there are only two such numbers, again, not enough to determine if this is a pattern. It doesn't look like taking sequential differences will help.
I know I did the quiz and realised that the answer was 36. When I saw what you had written, I thought you had forgotten the last number. When I saw the quiz, I realised it was a trick question. Think I got >20 correct, but cba to tick them off to see. Frankly, I got bored with it and was impatient to finish it.

ReplyDeletethere is a link to the answers - and two dozen more "teasers" but in any case, you're overtaxing the old grey cells... 36

ReplyDeleteI know what you mean - there is a fine line between "thinking out of the box" and suffering gimmicks. A few may be fun but more is not better.
ReplyDeleteAye. Most of them are what we would call trick questions anyway. After a while, one begins to feel a bit blase about the whole thing.
